At The Mill Academy, our Maths curriculum is carefully planned to ensure children build strong foundations in number, shape, space, measurement, data, and reasoning. We want pupils to grow in confidence, fluency, and enjoyment with maths, and to see how it connects to everyday life.

What We Teach and How

Maths is taught in discrete, regular lessons throughout the week, using clear progression so that new skills build on what has been learned before. We follow the national curriculum and use “progressive documents” to make sure each year covers the right mix of knowledge and skills.

To support strong learning, we use a “gather, practise, and apply” approach—first gathering new concepts, then practising skills, and finally applying them in problem-solving or real-world contexts. We also use robust assessment so teachers can check what children know and remember, and identify any gaps to address.

Supporting Times Tables

Knowing times tables is a key part of our Maths curriculum. We ensure that pupils regularly practise their multiplication facts so that these become automatic, supporting confidence in more complex calculations.

Engaging and Inclusive Learning

We believe that Maths should be both absolutely rigorous and enjoyable. Lessons are designed to be active and involve lots of modelling, discussion, and varied activities to suit all learning styles. Wherever possible, maths learning is connected to other topics or themes to make it more relevant and exciting. We also offer extra support and challenge to ensure every pupil—regardless of how confident they are—can make strong progress.

How Parents Can Help

Parents/carers play a vital role in helping children succeed in maths. To support at home, try to:

  • Encourage regular practice of times tables.

  • Talk about numbers in everyday contexts (like shopping, cooking, measuring).

  • Look at ways to use maths in hobbies or daily routines.

  • Engage with the homework or short tasks set by school to reinforce learning.
